The Minister of Sports Isaac Asiamah says renovation works on the Accra Sports Stadium will be completed in time for the 2018 CAF Total Women Africa Cup of Nations.

The Minister on Wednesday, February 7 cut sod for the commencement of the rehabilitation of the stadium after nearly a decade of negligence and he is confident the contractors will meet the deadline set by the Ministry for completion of the first phase of renovations.

The Minister assured the public that the government has made funds available and that by September 2018, the facility will be in great shape to host the women’s tournament.

“We are aware that Ghana will host the Africa Women’s championship in 2018 and we believe it will be ready. As I said its going to be fit and suitable for the tournament. The scoreboard will also be ready for the tournament come September 2018”, the Minister assured.

The assurance by the Minister seem to reinforce a statement by the Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee of the tournament that Ghana is prepared to host the tournament.

Honourable Freda Akosua Prempeh in an interview with Accra-based Oman FM reiterated Ghana’s readiness to stage a flawless tournament.

“I can boldly say that we are ready to host this year’s Africa Women Cup of Nations Tournament in Ghana looking at the advanced preparations by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) towards the launch of the tournament in February.”

‘The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has already been in Ghana for the first inspection of our stadia, and the feedback was positive, she said.

The Confederations of Africa Football (CAF) in 2016 awarded Ghana the right to host 2018 Women’s AFCON.

The 2018 Total Women Africa Cup of Nations will be the 13th edition of biennial tournament. The tournament is scheduled for November 17 to December 1, 2018
