Ghanaians would rather embrace and appreciate artistes who claim to be dancehall acts, yet dilute the genre, than pure dancehall acts.

This is the assertion of dancehall act AK Songstress who believes she is less appreciated because she has stuck to the true dancehall genre throughout her career.

According to the vocal musician, most of the dancehall acts here in Ghana, alter the genre with other forms like Afrobeat, which unfortunately appeals to the masses rather than the true genre.

“As a dancehall artiste, there is a way that your songs should sound. If we follow the right thing, as far as genre is concerned, I think the dancehall that we do [in Ghana], is not dancehall,” she asserted.

She told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, “The people who have actually come out and are doing well as dancehall acts, are not doing dancehall. So they are confusing the people, and the actual thing the people don’t like, they want the one that is mixed up with some Afrobeat and all that.”

The artiste, who is currently promoting her song, ‘37’, lamented, her career has been relatively slow because the society does not appreciate true dancehall.

“I have stuck to doing the actual thing, the right thing, for a very long time now and it seems that it is for a certain group of people,” she said.
