Rawlings Boxing Nightplay videoFormer President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings

Former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings has made a call on persons responsible for the development of Boxing in Ghana to revive the sport that once won the country’s first Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Rawlings is well known for mentoring Africa’s boxing legend Azumah Nelson, who won gold at the 1978 Commonwealth in the Featherweight class, compiling an amateur record of 50–2 during his governance.

However ever since his term as President, Ghana has struggled to raise another World champion to replicate Azumah Nelson’s record.

After watching Ghana’s promising World title hopeful, Isaac Dogboe TKO Argentina’s Javier Chacon at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, Rawlings testified that boxing is a very interesting sport that requires a lot of mental fortitude and sport admired by many Ghanaians.

“I don’t understand why anyone shouldn’t be fond of boxing.”

“Boxing is an interesting sport, it takes a lot of skill, courage, speed, imputativeness, perception and a sense of judgment.”

With regards to how Ghana has retrogressed in the present day boxing Rawlings admitted that Ghana has to recover and restore its previous World title glories enjoyed in the past.

“We have to recover and restore the kind of possession we had many years ago.”

“Featherweight especially has always been our division, but we neglected it.”

He added, “Ghanaian’s show so much enthusiasm, it will recover and with God talents like these, there is no doubt in my mind, we will make it.”
